Main materials and their sustainability profile
PVC vinyl: Most common outdoor material. Difficult to recycle and produces harmful emissions when incinerated. Avoid where alternatives exist. Polyester fabric: Better than PVC. Can often be recycled or repurposed. Paper-based substrates: Fully recyclable. Better for short-term indoor use.
Ink considerations
Latex inks are the most eco-friendly large format option, with lower emissions and comparable durability to solvent inks.
Design for reuse
The most sustainable large format print is the piece used many times. A fabric banner used at 20 events is far better than a PVC banner that goes to one event and then to landfill.
