Consumer expectations around packaging have changed dramatically. Paper-based packaging is growing. But not all paper packaging is equal, and the print choices matter as much as the substrate.
The packaging materials landscape
Kraft board and white coated board are the two main paper packaging substrates. Kraft is unbleached, naturally strong and fully recyclable. Coated board provides better print fidelity for brand colours.
Certification matters most in packaging
More than any other print product, packaging is scrutinised by consumers, retailers and regulators. FSC certification is not optional for any brand with a sustainability position.
Finishes to avoid
Plastic lamination, including biodegradable PLA plastics, typically makes packaging non-recyclable in standard UK streams. Aqueous matte coating is best — it maintains recyclability and has a premium feel.
