Large format print has a reputation for being environmentally damaging. Here's how to specify sustainable large format — from banners to exhibition stands.
Large format printing is often overlooked in sustainability conversations. The scale of materials involved makes it one of the highest-impact areas to get right.
Eco-solvent inks
Eco-solvent inks are reformulated versions of traditional solvent inks with milder solvents and lower VOC content. They’re now the standard at responsible large format printers.
Substrate choices
- PVC banners — widely used but difficult to recycle. Use only when durability genuinely demands it.
- Fabric displays — polyester fabric is more eco-friendly than PVC for exhibition use. Dye-sublimation printing uses water-based inks and the fabric is recyclable.
- Recyclable polypropylene (Correx) — recyclable and preferable to PVC for short-term outdoor signage.
- Dibond aluminium composite — highly durable, long-lasting. The longevity makes it more sustainable over time.
The reusability factor
A quality fabric exhibition system used at 20 events has a fraction of the per-use impact of 20 separate cheap banners. Invest in reusable display systems.
