Carbon-Neutral Print: What the Claims Really Mean

Carbon-Neutral Print: What the Claims Really Mean

An increasing number of print suppliers claim carbon neutrality. Here is how to evaluate those claims.

Carbon-neutral print is a growing marketing category. But the claims vary enormously — and some amount to little more than greenwashing.

What carbon-neutral actually means

True carbon neutrality means total greenhouse gas emissions from a product are balanced by an equivalent amount removed from the atmosphere — typically through verified offset purchases.

Offsets: not all equal

Carbon offsets are only as good as the projects behind them. Verified Carbon Standard and Gold Standard are the most credible schemes. Unverified offsets, particularly tree-planting promises without monitoring, are much weaker.

The hierarchy of climate claims

Best: actual emission reductions through renewable energy and efficiency. Good: verified offsets for unavoidable residual emissions. Weak: unverified offsetting. Misleading: vague eco labels with no verifiable backing.

How to evaluate a claim

Ask for their carbon calculation methodology and offset verification documents. A credible supplier will provide both readily.
