Carbon-neutral printing claims are everywhere. Here's how to tell the difference between genuine offset schemes and marketing greenwash.
An increasing number of print suppliers market their services as ‘carbon neutral.’ It’s a compelling claim — but what does it actually mean?
What it means
A genuinely carbon-neutral print job has had its emissions calculated, and an equivalent amount has been offset through a verified scheme — funding renewable energy, reforestation or methane capture. The key word is “calculated.” Credible claims require a genuine lifecycle assessment, not a rough estimate.
The verification standards
- Gold Standard — widely considered the most rigorous, founded with WWF involvement
- Verified Carbon Standard (VCS/Verra) — the largest voluntary standard by volume
- UK Woodland Carbon Code — specifically for UK forestry projects
If a supplier can’t name which standard their offsets are verified against, treat the claim with scepticism.
The honest position
