Laminated business cards dominate the market. Here is why unlaminated cards are better — for the environment and often for the impression they make.
The majority of business cards printed in the UK are laminated. This is partly habit, partly that online platforms default to laminated stock, and partly a perception that lamination feels more premium. It is worth questioning.
Why lamination is problematic
Lamination makes the card unrecyclable in standard paper streams. It has to be peeled off before the paper can be recycled, which in practice almost never happens. Laminated business cards go to landfill.
The feel question
A 450gsm uncoated business card on high-quality stock has a substantial, premium feel that is often more impressive than a lighter card with plastic lamination. The texture of uncoated stock is distinctive and memorable.
Alternatives
Soft-touch aqueous coating gives a velvety matte feel without plastic content. It is compostable. The practical specification: 350-450gsm uncoated FSC certified card, no lamination, vegetable-based inks.
