Recycled Paper vs Virgin Paper: Which Should You Choose?

Recycled Paper vs Virgin Paper: Which Should You Choose?

Recycled paper is not always the most sustainable choice. Here is how to decide for your project.

Most buyers assume recycled paper is always greener. The reality is more nuanced.

The case for recycled paper

Recycled paper keeps material out of landfill and reduces demand for virgin wood pulp. It typically has a lower carbon footprint and sends a clear signal about your values.

The limitations

Paper fibres shorten with each recycling cycle. After around 5-7 cycles they become too short to be useful. Recycled paper also requires processing to remove inks.

The case for virgin FSC paper

FSC certified paper comes from responsibly managed forests. For colour-critical work, virgin FSC stock delivers better results and the environmental impact is certified.

Recommendation

For day-to-day print, specify recycled stock. For colour-critical work, choose virgin FSC. Both are better than uncertified alternatives.
