FSC vs PEFC: What’s the Difference and Why It Matters for Your Print

If you’ve ever ordered print and seen the letters FSC or PEFC on the paper specification, you might have wondered what they actually mean. You’re not alone. Even experienced buyers often use the terms interchangeably. They shouldn’t.

What is FSC?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-profit organisation that sets standards for responsible forest management. Paper carrying the FSC label has been verified through a chain of custody — from the forest it came from, through the mill, to the printer, and finally to you. FSC certification comes in three types: FSC 100% (all material from certified forests), FSC Recycled (post-consumer reclaimed fibre) and FSC Mix (a combination).

What is PEFC?

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is the world’s largest forest certification system by area. Where FSC operates a single global standard, PEFC works by endorsing national schemes. Both are credible and independently audited.

Which is better?

Both are robust certification systems. FSC is more widely recognised in the UK and carries stronger brand recognition with consumers. For most print buyers, FSC is the safer choice for marketing purposes. Both are genuinely credible — the most important thing is that one of them appears on your print.

How to verify credentials

Ask your print supplier for their FSC certificate number. It looks like FSC-C012345 and can be verified at info.fsc.org. At printing.uk, every supplier is verified for eco credentials before they can receive quote requests.
